I’m not Kanu, but I want to make History with Nigeria – Simy Nwankwo

They say a new star is born every generation, but as far as Stars go, Kanu Nwankwo is irreplaceable in Nigeria football.

In his days, Kanu showed exemplary knowledge of the game; even from a young age, and matured into a gangling bundle of skill.

Fast forward, seven years after his international retirement and Nigerian football fans will hope they have found a player cut from the cloth of that Legend, in Simy Nwankwo.

Simy earned his first call up to the senior team at 26; 8 years later than Papilo, but many have identified striking similarities between the two.

And although the Crotone forward acknowledges the semblance, he however admits he wouldn’t embrace such comparisons.

‘I move like myself, I don’t compare myself to any of the Legends or greats. I feel it’s a good thing to reference me with Kanu, but he’s a massive Legend and I adore him,’ he told

The Lagos-born forward was a straight pick for Gernot Rohr and made Nigeria’s 23-man squad to the world cup.

He played cameos in the games against Croatia and Argentina in the group stages but will hope for more game time and the chance to write his own history.

‘I’ll wait for my time and see when I get to start or play more game time. I don’t make comparisons of myself and any player before me or my contemporary, I just want to go out and do thing and create my own history.’
