4 Onitsha traders jailed for selling fake drugs

NAFDAC intercepts fake, unregistered, banned drugs in Delta

A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, yesterday sentenced four Onitsha traders to 72 months imprisonment for possession and sale of fake drugs.

Each of the convicts, Anayo Okoye, Ifeanyi Onuoha, Chukwudozie Eze and Okechukwu Nwafor, will serve 18 months in prison.

They were found guilty by the court presided over by Justice A. Abubakar for possessing and selling counterfeit and substandard drugs bearing forged trademarks resembling the trademarks of Neros Pharmaceuticals Limited.

They were arraigned by the Federal Government on a six-count charge bothering on possession of fake and counterfeit drugs in Onitsha, Anambra state.

Their counsel, E. O. Ego, had earlier appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy considering the fact that the convicts were first offenders and as well as breadwinners of their families.

Delivering judgment, Abubakar held that the accused/defendants should serve a prison term of 18 months each “in view of the exhibits tendered.” He, however, ordered that the jail term should run concurrently since one of the convicts had already been incarcerated for about five years.

The prosecutor, Mr. Nwokoro Emeka Emmanuel, who is also a zonal legal officer, Federal Ministry of Justice, Enugu, hailed the judgment, describing it as a step in the right direction. He said:

“The judgment is a step in the right direction because that will send a warning to all those out there peddling fake drugs to the society.

I do know that a lot of people have died as a result of fake drugs and this judgment will help in stopping that in society. We are there to ensure that people are safe in society.”
