4 Policemen escape death as hoodlums attack them with machetes ,axes
Four policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team ( IRT) have been hack by hoodlums who attacked them with a dangerous weapon in Ogoja, Cross River State.
The operatives had gone to effect the arrest of the notorious criminal receiver of stolen vehicle were last Wednesday but were attacked by armed thugs at the Ogoja Town.
The operatives who were deployed from the Lagos State Annex office of the IRT to Cross Rivers State, to track and recover the vehicle belonging to Master Chapel, a church based in Lagos State, was attacked, when they attempted to recover the vehicle from the receiver, Ikenga.
It was gathered that the vehicle, which was robbed at gunpoint by a four-man of a gang of armed robbers, made up of Peter, Ben, Ebuka, and Johnson, on November 8, 2018, was taken to Benue State and sold to Ikenga, for N250,000.
A senior police officer said that IRT operatives got reports of the robbery, commenced investigations and arrested the suspects, who confessed to the theft, several others. One of the suspects led the operatives to Benue State, where the vehicle was sold and on the investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle has been moved to Ogoja Town, by Ikenga.
It was gathered further that the operatives, on arriving Ogoja, made their presence known to the Ogoja police division and the Area Command, but on arriving the location where Ikenga was with vehicle, they were attacked by thugs who were armed with cutlass and other dangerous objects.
A source explained that the operatives weren’t expecting Ikenga and the thugs around him to be hostile at them because as they came peacefully and they identified themselves to him.
The source explained further that the operatives could not use their firearms as they were being attacked as the members of the public would have misrepresented the fact,’ so the hoodlums had a field day inflicting the policemen with machete cuts. Some of them were hacked with an axe.
It was gathered that help came the way of the operatives as they were rescued by operatives from the Ogoja police division who rushed them to Markurdi General Hospital, Benue State, while Ikenga successfully escaped with the robbed Toyota Sienna Bus .
A police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not supposed to speak said that three of the operatives have been discharged from the hospital, but one of them, Julius who sustained the serious injury was still receiving treatment at the hospital in Markudi.
