AFCON 2019: Stats Show why Cameroon must be very Worried against Nigeria

Nigeria’s pedigree as a powerhouse in African football was established long ago and especially in the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles – former Green Eagles – have been one of the most dominant sides.

In it’s previous 17 appearances, the Eagles have gone past the first round at least 15 times and have emerged winners on three occasions.

On Saturday at the Alexandria Stadium, the Super Eagles will hope to continue that winning tradition when they go up against five times winners and defending champion Cameroon.

Historically, Nigeria have a better head to head record against Cameroon; the latter having won 11 and lost just four times in 22 meetings.

In recent meetings, Nigeria have also been dominant going on their longest ever unbeaten streak against the indomitable Lions – Four wins and a draw in their five encounters.

However, Saturday’s meeting comes with an extra motivation as the Eagles will be facing the holders.

It is the 7th time Nigeria is facing a defending champion at any stage in the competition.

The Country’s record stands at 4 wins, 2 draws and a defeat against defending champions between 1984 to 2013.

1984

Group Stage: *Ghana 1-2 Nigeria

1988

Group Stage: Nigeria 0-0 Egypt*

1992

3rd Place: Nigeria 2-1 Cameroon

2004

Quarter-final: *Cameroon 1-2 Nigeria

2006

Quarter-final: Nigeria 1-1 Tunisia* (PK 6-5)

2010

Group Stage: *Egypt 3-1 Nigeria

2013

Group Stage: *Zambia 1-1 Nigeria
