Amunike’s Tanzania delay 2019 AFCON hope with Lesotho loss

Emmanuel Amuneke’s Tanzania dream of reaching AFCON for the first time since 1980 suffered a set back as Nkau Lerotholi scored the only goal of the game to help Lesotho to a 1-0 win in Maseru.

After Uganda’s 1-0 win over Cape Verde on Saturday, Amuneke’s side needed to win and seal qualification for Cameroon next year, but they were punished in the 77th minutes by Nkau Lerotholi who scored and send Lesotho to second in the process while the Taifa Stars dropped to third.

Tanzania went into the game without leading attacker Mbwana Samatta, they created chances to take the lead in the first half but could not do so due to the failure of the attackers to convert glorious opportunities.

In the second half, Lesotho became more purposeful and continued to dominate possession while the Taifa Stars had the better of the chances to go in front until Nkau Lerotholi eventually grab the decisive goal when the Taifa Stars failed to clear their lines after conceding a needless corner kick in the 77th minute.

Amuneke who the AFCON as a player with Nigeria introduced Bocco to try and rescue the point for his side but the Crocodile hung on to the lead and would eventually claim the 1-0.

The win means Lesotho would join Tanzania on five points in the group but with a better goal advantage, while Cape Verde are bottom of the group with four points.

There is a lot to play for in the final Group game, as any of the three teams can still join already qualified Uganda for the championship in Cameroon next year.
