Anthony Nwakaeme scores, Mikel Bosses Midfield as Trabzonspor go Top in Turkey

Anthony Nwakaeme scored the winner for Trabzonspor as they defeated Genclerbirligi to go top of the table in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday.

Nwakaeme returned to league action action after missing last weekend’s game against Fenerbahce due to a suspension.

He did play in the Cup win over BB Erzurumspor, getting one of Five goals and helped his side with a huge first-leg advantage.

The Striker followed up that performance with a goal on Saturday as Trabzonspor secured a hard fought 2-0 victory in front of their home fans.

Hüseyin Çimşir’s men broke the deadlock in the 79th minute after a very tight first half, and didn’t look back after taking the lead.

Six minutes later Nwakaeme doubled for the Black Sea Storm and took his goal tally for the league season to 8 in 19 appearances.

His Nigerian compatriot Mikel Obi also returned to action after sitting out the Cup victory four days earlier.

The 32 year-old midfielder was rested after a difficult time in the past days following racist attacks on him and his family.

He played the entire duration against Genclerbirligi in the front of a four-man defensive wall.

Victory for Trabzon in the game means they are now tied on 41 points with Sivasspor, but knock the latter of the top spot with a superior goals difference.

In the next eight days both teams will clash in a potential title decider at the Şenol Güneş Stadium.

Goal scoring responsibility will fall heavily on Nwakaeme after league top scorer Alexander Sorloth was sent off late in the game against Saturday’s opponents.

The 24 year-old Norwegian is on 16 goals and just one goal better by Alanyaspor Senegalese Striker Papiss Cisse, while Nwakaeme is 8th in the goalscorers’ chart, with 8 goals and 5 assists.
