Former Jose Mourinho assistant, Rui Faria has moved to the front of the queue for the Aston Villa job after Thierry Henry turned down an offer from the Championship club.
Henry informed Villa on Tuesday night that he would not be succeeding Steve Bruce as the club’s next manager.
The former Arsenal striker, who is Roberto Martinez’s assistant with the Belgium national team, is on a shortlist of candidates Monaco are considering to replace Leonardo Jardim.
Villa had hoped to announce Henry’s arrival on Monday, but they will now recommence interviews with the remaining candidates.
Jose Mourinho’s former assistant Faria is now rated as the current favourite to succeed Bruce with John Terry as his assistant.
Other names still in the frame are Terry himself, Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers and Brentford’s Dean Smith.
Faria is keen to move into management, having spent 17 years working under Mourinho at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and in Portugal before leaving Manchester United at the end of last season.
