AWCON 2018: Teams are closing in on Super Falcons, Oshoala admits

Super Falcons’ attacker Asisat Oshoala has revealed she’s impressed with the how Women football has developed in Africa and believes the gaps between the Super Powers and the minors has reduced drastically.

The ongoing 11th African Women Cup of Nations in Ghana has witnessed a lot of surprises in the group games so far, with host Nation Ghana the biggest casualties after suffering early elimination from the tournament in a group that has Cameroon, Mali, and Algeria.

 

In Group B, Zambia whitewashed two-time champions Equatorial Guinea 5:0 in their first game, while Bayana Bayana of South Africa stunned the most successful Women football team on the continent the Super Falcons of Nigeria 1: 0.

 

However, Oshoala who’s the current African female footballer of the year in a chat with Brila.net’s Oluwaseyi Alao from Super Falcons camp in Ghana how the game has grown on the continent.

 

“I think it’s a different feeling, because this competition is the qualification to the World Cup, so there have been upset at the tournament, team that I think are lower teams or underdogs have been upsetting the big sides and the other day we lost to South Africa, so it has been interesting so far”.

 

The Super Falcons bounced back from opening day defeat to South Africa and trashed the Shepolopolo of Zambia 4:0, in spite the win, the Former Liverpool and Arsenal striker opined that the other teams are now closer to the Super Falcons.

 

“We played against Zambia and it was very difficult, unlike two years back when Nigeria U17 or U20 could play and win those games but they gave us a tough time and it was not easy.”

 

The Dalian Quanjian F.C of China added that qualifications to the Women world cup in France next year is a priority for the Falcons.

 

“Its the team goal that’s more important, we need to qualify for the 2019 World Cup in France, then we can now start thinking of retaining the trophy.”

 

Nigeria will clash with Equatorial Guinea today (Saturday) for the last Group B with a semi-final ticket at stake and Both teams have won the last ten African Women Cup of Nations between them.
