Balogun Recovers, Set For Mainz vs Gladbach Bundesliga Clash

By Johnny Edward:

Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has recovered fully from the illness that kept him out of the Super Eagles clash against Serbia at the Hive Stadium last Tuesday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 29-year-old trained with his Mainz teammates on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Nigerian international is one of the four players that could replace the injured Abdou Diallo, who is recovering from a broken nose, according his club manager Sandro Schwarz.

“Niko is a candidate to start on Sunday,” Schwarz told Mainz’s official website on Friday.
“Alexander Hack, Leon Balogun or Jean-Philippe Gbamin are also in contention to replace Diallo.

“There are no more breaks from now on, just a very clear objective from week to week. Despite everything, we have the chance to climb up to 15th in the table.

“The first step is putting in a good performance against Gladbach on Sunday. That doesn’t meant that we make every pass, but we have to give off the impression that we are ready to fight for survival at all costs.

“The international break gave us a well needed break. We had the chance to breathe. Now we have seven games, as well as a possible pair of relegation games, ahead of us. We have to get better results and we have to let our play do the talking on the pitch.”

Balogun has made 12 Bundesliga appearance for Mainz who are 16th in the table with 25 points from 27 games.
