Retired Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, AIG Hakeem Odumosu, has charged the newly promoted police officers to be good ambassadors.
Fifty- two police officers were decorated with their new ranks by AIG Odumosu, six from the ranks of Superintendent of Police (SP) to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP), and 46 officers from the rank Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP).
AIG Odumosu gave the charge while decorating the newly promoted police at Command Headquarters Ikeja, saying that officers should have it in their minds that they are to serve the public whose taxes are used in paying their salaries.
” In a few days’ time, I will be pulled out of the Force and I will go back to civil life. You should have it on your mind that you can’t remain police officers forever. That is why you should serve the public with your best, respecting their rights in accordance with the international standard of best practices. Human rights must be respected.
” Most of you will become divisional police officers while others will be sent to head other units of the force; please, use your new offices to serve humanity and don’t inflict pains on the people you are supposed to protect. Don’t intimidate the public because of your uniform. One day, you are going to leave the force and become civilians again.
” I am praying that you will retire meritoriously.
None of you will die during service. You will retire well and receive your pension and other benefits, but will you beat your chest that you have served the public with conscience and integrity. You have to police with the fear of God. I am out of the service and my good or bad deads while serving the public matter a lot because I will be judged by them by the public. I am advising that if you were of bad character, you should change and start policing with the fear of God. You should be good ambassadors and change the narratives. Our image has been battered that we need you to change the narratives”.
The newly-promoted officers thanked the CP and promised to serve the public with a conscience.
One of the officers, former Personal Assistant to one time Lagos state commissioner of police CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd ) SP Opeifa Omolola, said she was happy with her promotion and with the advice of Mr. Odumosu who she described as a no-nonsense officer.
