CAFCC: Boboye Rues Plateau United’s Missed Chances Vs USM, Still Hopeful

By Adeboye Amosu:

Plateau United head coach Kennedy Boboye hopes his team will not pay for their missed goal scoring chances when they take on Algeria’s USM Alger in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup play-off tie, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The Nigerian champions laboured to a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Agege Stadium, Lagos on Saturday.

The scoreline could however have been more emphatic had the Jos club converted the plethora of chances they created.

“My biggest disappointment has to do with the fact that we didn’t score enough goals in this game,” Boboye who led the Tin City club to win their first Nigeria Professional Football League title last season told Completesportsnigeria.com after the game.

“At this stage of this competition, it is important to score enough goals when you are playing at home. We could have scored up to six goals in the game but for poor finishing on the part of my players.

“Now, we have to keep working hard and hope for the best in the second leg and I believe we still have a chance despite the slim scoreline.

“I just hope these chances that we didn’t convert won’t come back to haunt us in Algiers.”

The game was played at a near empty Agege Stadium, a venue Plateau United were forced to adopt after CAF deemed their original home ground, New Jos Stadium, not suitable to host the game following construction works still going on at the ground.

Boboye however refused to give that as an excuse for his team’s poor display in the game.

“Lagos is in Nigeria and not a state outside the country. That we didn’t play in Jos is not an excuse as the few fans who were at the stadium gave us full support,” he added.

“This is not the right time to give excuses but rather work harder and do things right in the second leg.”

The overall winner of the contest will proceed to the group stages.

Another Algerian club MC Alger defeated MFM 6-0 in Algiers after losing the first leg of their CAF Champions League tie 2-1 in Agege in March.
