CAFCC: MFM Knocked Out By Mali’s Djoliba

By Adeboye Amosu:

Nigeria’s MFM FC were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup despite a face saving 0-0 draw against Djoliba of Mali in the second leg of their play-off tie at the Modibo Keita Stadium in Bamako on Wednesday.

Djoliba edged out the Olukoya Boys 1-0 on aggregate having won the first leg 1-0 at the Agege Stadium and will now take part in the group stages of the competition.

The hosts dominated proceedings from start to finish but were unable to find a way past the MFM defence marshalled by skipper Austine Opara.

Oumar Kida, Siaka Bagayoko and Mohammed Cisse also wasted clear-cut opportunities for the hosts in the entertaining encounter.

MFM failed to conjure anything meaningful upfront despite a strong display by the team’s talisman Chukwuka Onuwa.

Nigeria now has only one representative, Enyimba, left in the competition following the ouster of Plateau United and Akwa United.

Plateau United lost 4-0 against Algeria’s USM Alger on Tuesday, bowing out 5-2 on aggregate, while Akwa United beat Al Hilal of 3-1 in Uyo earlier on Wednesday but exited the competition on away goals rule having lost the first leg 2-0.

Enyimba were held 0-0 at home South Africa’s Bidvest Wits but progressed into the group stages on away goals rule after holding the Clever Boys to a 1-1 in the first leg.
