Champions League: Ronaldo Fires Blanks As Madrid Punish Wasteful Bayern

Real Madrid boosted their chances of winning a third successive UEFA Champions League title by defeating Bayern Munich 2-1 in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League first leg semi-final match at the Allianz Arena.

Joshua Kimmich scored Bayern Munich’s opening goal in the 28th minute but two minutes before the break Marcelo’s half volley from the edge of the box drew the reigning European Champions level.

Substitute Marco Asensio scored the winner for Real Madrid in the 57th minute.

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in the Champions League this season for the first time on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal forced a save from Sven Ulreich while Bayern’s Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery also had scoring chances to score but were denied by Keylor Navas in the first half.

Kimmich finished off a brilliant move down the right flank from a lovely pass from James Rodriguez to open the scoring.

Ribery who was a thorn in the flesh of the Real Madrid defence failed to take a chance gifted him to double Bayern Munich’s lead four minutes later after his first poor touch in the box let him down.

Real’s first big real chance at goal was converted by Marcelo who struck a brilliant volley from the edge.

At half time, Isco was replaced by Asensio and in the 52nd minute, the young Spanish international scored Madrid’s second goal with a lovely dink from a breakaway.

Ronaldo had the ball in the net in the 70th minute but his goal was ruled out for handball.

Robert Lewandowski had a chance make it 2-2 in the 85th minute when he was played through on goal by Corentin Tolisso but the Polish striker’s shot went inches wide.

With the victory, Real Madrid became the first club to reach 150 Champions League wins.
