There is controversy over the death of a maid, Joy Okom Adole who allegedly committed suicide in Bariga area of Lagos.

The husband and wife who employed her have been arrested and are being interrogated by the Police at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba for their alleged involvement in the death of their housemaid.

It was gathered that the suspects, Mr and Mrs.Steve, were arrested on Wednesday by detectives following a complaint they lodged at the station that their house help committed suicide.

The couple had gone to the station to report the death of their maid who, according to them committed suicide.

It was learnt that contrary to their claims, homicide detectives on arrival at the scene discovered that the deceased was still standing while a rope was hanging on her neck which made it suspicious that she did not commit suicide as her legs were still touching the floor

The detectives also discovered that the deceased had bruises all over her body

The complaints situation was further compounded when the family of the deceased alleged that they believed that the deceased was killed by her employers.

The police said that the incident occurred at 18 Ogundola street, Bariga area of Lagos.

Philips Ejeh, who is the deceased relation claimed that the victim was actually killed by her bosses when she went to ask for her salary.

Ejeh explained that his sister allegedly started working with her boss in January and that she only worked three months before she was beaten to death.

“She told me that her boss always refuses to pay her at the end of the month. This often ended in an argument between my sister and her boss. My sister was actually making an attempt to leave the job before the lockdown, which forced her to remain at her work.

“I was shocked when I heard of the death of my sister last Sunday. In defense, her boss alleged that my sister was beaten up after she was caught stealing noodles and out of shame, she committed suicide.

“Her madam denied beating her to death, insisting that my sister hanged herself after she was caught stealing noodles. My sister got this job because she wanted to further her education, now she is dead what becomes of her ambition.

“As I am talking to you the case has been reported to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba while the body has been deposited in the Mortuary for autopsy”

he added.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, said the principal suspect and her husband reported at Bariga Police Station about the death of their house help.

Elkana said that they alleged that the deceased allegedly committed suicide.

He said that upon the report detectives visited the house and that the team started suspecting foul play after they saw the position of the rope which the deceased allegedly used to hang herself and the bruises which the deceased sustained all over her body.

He said that the police suspected that the deceased might have been tortured to death and that to cover their track ,those behind her death decided to hang the girl to make it look like suicide

He said:

” Through Police investigation, we found a lot of violent marks on her body suggesting that she was tortured before a rope was put on her neck. The suspects will soon be charged to the Court “.
