Croatia Star Rakitic To Undergo Surgery On Fractured Finger

Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic is to undergo surgery after injuring his finger in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League 3-0 second-leg quarter-final defeat away to AS Roma.

Barcelona confirmed Rakitic’s injury on their verified Twitter handle on Wednesday.

The runaway LaLiga leaders were knocked out by Roma on the away goals rule after aggregate score stood at 4-4.

“During the course of Tuesday’s match, Ivan Rakitic took a hit to the first finger of his left hand. This morning’s tests have confirmed that he has a fractured metacarpal bone. The Croatian will undergo surgery this evening, after which a statement will be issued to explain how the operation went and how long the player is expected to be out of action,” Barcelona tweeted.

Rakitic is expected to feature for Croatia when they take on the Super Eagles in their opening Group D match at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Argentina and debutantes Iceland are the two other countries in Group D.
