Customs seizes 11,232 smuggled military uniforms

The Rivers State Area command of the Nigerian Customs Service has seized at least 11,232 pieces of illegally imported military wear.

This was revealed at the state Customs office in Onne yesterday by the Assistant Comptroller-General, Sanusi Umar,  during the inspection of the confiscated items.

Umar said the reason for the seizure was because private individuals and companies were not legally permitted to import military kits.

He said the seizure followed an ongoing investigation into an earlier seized container of military wear in June, owned by an importer.

He also hinted that the importer of the materials has been identified as Ogwatabo Jerry, who has been arrested and is under investigation.

He said the latest 11,232 pieces were a total of different assortments hidden in a container that also contained civilian attire and other materials.

“After profiling the importer’s transactions, I am happy to inform you that we have arrested another container MRKU 4909151 (1×40ft) belonging to the same company, Ehigocho Nigeria Limited, with Ogwatabo Jerry as the prime suspect.

“On examination, it was found to contain the following: 620 sets of complete sewn military camouflage uniforms and caps, 10,000 pieces of inner military T-shirts and 512 pairs of military jungle boots,” Umar said.

He added that “Mr. Ogwatabo is the sole importer that opens the Form M for the importation of these two containers.

“Let me use this opportunity to draw the attention of Nigerians that importation of any kind of military wear by any individual, company, or group is prohibited by Nigerian law, under the Custom and Excise Management Act.”
