Don’t give birth to children you can’t cater for – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has warned that it was a grievous sin for parents to give birth to children they would not be able to cater for.

Idris Igp

The IGP, who gave the warning yesterday in Lagos, said it was better not to give birth than to abandon one’s children on the streets. He reminded parents that such action was a crime under the law.

The IGP, who gave the admonition while presenting food items to motherless babies at the SOS Village, Isolo, lamented that some of the abandoned children not only constituted public nuisance but were used by robbers to perpetrate heinous crimes across the nation.

Donations by IGP to SOS

The police chief, who was represented by the commander of Area ‘D’, Mushin, ACP Akinbayo Olasoji, explained that the gesture was part of activities to mark the just-concluded Sallah celebration, as well as to give them a sense of belonging.

He said: “We are here to donate some items to SOS children in celebration of Sallah. The IGP is trying to introduce a new dimension in policing, so as to show that, in spite of the tedious nature of our job, we are also human and we have the feelings of orphans at heart. He is so passionate about giving to children and widows because God has directed that we care for these sets of people.

“ What we are trying to do is to ensure that some of these children that have been taken from the streets are given a sense of belonging. The homes did well by taking them away from the streets. But if there is no donation from good-spirited Nigerians, they may be forced to go back to the streets, where they are used for pick-pocketing, traffic robbery and other crimes.

“My advice to them is to focus on their studies and also to be encouraged that, no matter where they are today or their background,  they can still get to where God has destined them to be.

“We came here to donate items to the SOS Children’s Village. I  was sent by the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, to bring these items for the use of the children here.

“What we are trying to do is take some of these children off the streets to avoid their being used by hoodlums to steal phones and other items. These homes were created to take abandoned children off the street and give them a family to grow in.

“We believe that when children do not have this kind of facility to stay in and people to donate, they become vulnerable and easily take to crime. “I want the children to be encouraged and take their studies seriously. They should understand that no matter their backgrounds, they still have bright futures.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, the coordinator, Mrs. Bunmi Onifade, said a total of 126 persons brought into the home have been resettled since inception.

She said they were resettled after they graduated from higher institutions and became independent, adding that the facility had about 123 children and teenagers it was currently catering for.

Onifade said: “We appreciate these gifts from the office of the IGP and pray that God will replenish their pocket and their support to mankind will be noticed.”
