Draw Just Like Victory! Rohr Celebrates Nigeria’s return to AFCON

Nigeria will make it’s 18th appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations next year in Cameroon after the Super Eagles picked a point against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana following a 1-1 result in the second-leg group E 2019 AFCON qualifying match on Saturday.

The Eagles scored first through an own goal by Bafana defender Buhle Mkhwanazi inside the opening 9 minutes, but were pegged back by a combo of Percy Tau’s trickery and Lebo Mothiba’s good positioning to tap home 17 minutes later.

Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr was full of praise for his players and maintains they stuck to the script.

Speaking after the match the German tactician said, ‘We came in just yesterday, we didn’t really sleep well and we knew we had to conserve energy but remain sharp and focused at the same time. We scored first and made them chase.

‘We knew a draw was just like a victory. Of course we tried to score. We did what we had to and make them come against our defence.’

With the result, Nigeria now have 10points from 5 matches; with 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.

The Eagles play their final group match at home on March 22, 2019 against Seychelles, who have already been eliminated following their 8-1 defeat at the hands of Libya.
