FA Cup: Moses Overcomes Iheanacho, Ndidi As Chelsea Advance, To Face Southampton; United Draw Spurs

By James Agberebi:

Chelsea put their disappointment of crashing out of the UEFA Champions League behind them as they edged Leicester City 2-1 after extra-time at the King Power Stadium to qualify for the semi-finals of the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday.

Chelsea will meet Southampton in the semi-finals while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will battle for a place in the final following the draw held immediately after the last quarter-final.

Super Eagles trio Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi for Leicester and Victor Moses for Chelsea were all in action. Iheanacho was later replaced by Shinji Okazaki in the second half.

Alvaro Morata ended a run of 13 games without a goal in all competitions as he put Chelsea 1-0 up before Jamie Vardy equalised for Leicester with just over 10 minutes left in the game.

After both teams failed to find the winner, the game went into extra-time.

And in last minute of first half extra-time, Pedro Rodriguez who came on as a substitute, scored what proved to be the winner to send Chelsea into the last four.

Chelsea now complete the semi-final line-up that also include Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton.

Leicester had the first big chance in the third minute off a decent volley from Marc Albrighton which went just wide of the target.

In the 20th minute, Ndidi tested Willy Caballero from distance which the Argentine keeper gathered well.

Chelsea eventually broke the deadlock on 42 minutes thanks to Morata who ran through Willian’s superb pass after the Brazilian ran all the way from his own half.

Before the start of the second half, Chelsea made the game’s first change with Cesc Fabregas replacing Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Leicester should have equalised on 53 minutes but an unmarked Vardy failed to direct his header from Ndidi’s cross towards goal.

At the other end Moses swung in a teasing cross which Schmeichel tipped away from Morata.

Leicester’s persistence eventually paid off on 76 minutes as Vardy pounced on a rebound following initial last-ditched blocks by the Chelsea defence.

Pedro made up for his earlier miss as he got Chelsea back in front on the stroke of first half extra-time, getting ahead three Leicester players to head in N’Golo Kante’s cross past Schmeichel.

In the 20th minute of extra-time, Kante was denied the chance of extending Chelsea’s lead as Albrighton made an important block.

Leicester threw the duo of Demarai Gray and Andre Silva in the last part of the game but Chelsea held on to secure their passage into the semi-final.
