How to Enable macOS Mojave Dark Mode

How to Enable macOS Mojave Dark Mode is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.

In this guide we’ll show you how to turn on Dark Mode in macOS Mojave. In Apple’s latest macOS 10.14 release they finally introduced dark mode, which removes all those blinding white screen elements and windows. This long-awaited feature is finally here, so try it today.

Whether you just got the macOS Mojave update, or you tried the beta, you’ll want to use dark mode. This is great for those who work in the evenings, delivers a better experience watching movies, and can help prevent eye strain.

How to Enable Dark Mode in macOS Mojave

When you first install macOS Mojave, you’ll be asked if you want to try the dark theme. If you skipped this you can easily enable it in System Preferences > General > Appearance as shown below.

  • Step 1: Click the Apple Menu Icon at the top left
  • Step 2: Select System Preferences…
  • Step 3: Next, click on General
  • Step 4: Choose the Second Option (Dark Mode) under Appearance

Additionally, you can choose from eight different accent colors and the usual highlight colors in the Appearance settings menu. Customize the experience as you see fit, and you’re all set. The new macOS dark mode theme is one of many exciting new features you’ll surely love.

Which Apps Support Dark Mode in Mojave?

Most of Apple’s apps already support the dark mode theme and look great. However, only a few 3rd party apps have it, and most will likely need to issue software updates. Apple released an API that lets developers quickly and easily add the dark mode to their apps, so we expect to see plenty of support from most apps in the near future.

Can I Use Dark Mode on My Mac?

Right now, only developers can try the Mojave beta but we’re expecting an open beta this summer. Then, macOS 10.14 Mojave will get released later this fall. When it does, then you can enable dark mode by following our instructions above.

However, it looks like some older Macs will not get the update. Mojave will be compatible with MacBooks and Macs from mid-2012 or later. So even if you run High Sierra just fine, if your Mac is too old, it won’t get the update. That said, older 2010 and 2012 Pac Pro models with a high-end graphics card (Metal-capable) will get Mojave.

How to Disable Dark Mode in macOS Mojave

When you first install the macOS Mojave update, you’ll be asked which theme you’d like to use. If you chose dark mode but now you want to disable it, here’s how.

  • Step 1: Click the Apple Menu Icon at the top left
  • Step 2: Select System Preferences…
  • Step 3: Then, click on General
  • Step 4: Choose the First Option (Light Mode) under Appearance

Essentially, just quickly go back into System Preferences > General > Appearance and deselect dark mode and it’ll default back to the original light mode we’ve all used for years.

Remember, the macOS Mojave update is still in a limited beta, and won’t arrive for the public until later this fall. So, save this guide and come back when the update is ready so you can try Dark Mode. Then, check out these 11 Great Mojave Features You’ll Love.
