FIFA celebrates Kanu, Babayaro, 26 years after epic U17 World Cup final victory

On this day 26 years ago, Wilson Oruma, Kanu Nwankwo and Celestine Babayaro inspired Nigeria to a second U17 World Cup title, in Japan, to win a second title.

Nigeria defeated Ghana 2-1 in the first all-African final in the competition with goals from Oruma and Peter Anosike.

 

FIFA paid tribute to the team on social media, Wednesday, with a tweet celebrating three players that went on enjoy success in their senior careers.

The Fanny Amun-led side swept through from the group stages without dropping points and knocked out hosts Japan in the quarter-finals.

 

Nigeria scored the most goals (20)  and conceded just three times, joint lowest with Ghana.

 

Oruma finished the tournament as the top scorer with 6 goals, while Ghana’s Daniel Addo was voted the player of the tournament, taking home the golden ball.

 

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have since gone on to become he most successful team in the competition, with 5 titles. Ghana’s Black Starlets have won it just twice.
