Foremost women football promoter, Harry Awurimibe has called on the Super Falcons’ handler, Thomas Dennerby to make concerted efforts to build a new set of players that can sustain the legacies of coaches like Ismaila mabo who guided the falcons to the quarter-final stage of the world cup and also booked an Olympic Games ticket for Nigeria and Africa.
Speaking to Cornerstonenewsng.comjust after the Falcons’ hard fought 4-3 win against Slovakia in the Cyprus Women’s tournament, Awurimibe noted that the present crop of players were discoverd some 10 years ago and it is time to start hunting for replacements.
“The present crop of players we have now were discovered some 10 years ago but the basic assessment for any Super Falcons coach would be if such a coach can equal the feat achieved in 1999 by Ismaila mabo where the Nigerian team not just qualified for the quarter-final, finished 7th which was good enough to secure a ticket to the Sydney 2000 Olympics as that was the criteria then”, Awurimibe stated emphatically.
The Super Falcons battled to edge past Slovakia in a seven goal thriller after an opening day loss and will now face Belgium in the final group game next Monday at the GSZ stadium in Larnaca.
