Kylian Mbappe outshone several big names including Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano in France’s 4-3 win over Argentina in Saturday’s Last-16 game at the FIFA World Cup.
The result of the game also brought an end to the 15-year international career of Mascherano.
34-year-old Mascherano, called time on his Argentina career after the match where Mbappe netted a brace; and was a constant thorn in the side of La Albiceleste defence.
Mbappe was let loose on a laboured defence, attempting more dribbles (10) than the entire Argentine side, and seven more than Messi. Argentina were so petrified, they resorted to kicking him, fouling him three times in the opening 20 minutes.
The Youngster’s goal came in the second half, and four minutes apart to give France a 4-2 lead; before substitute, Sergio Kun Aguero scored a late third.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the final whistle, Mascherano said: “It’s time to say goodbye and for the younger players to step in.
“Hopefully in the future these kids can achieve something. Now I’m just one more fan of the national team.”
Mascherano made a fourth world cup appearance in Russia and is the most capped Argentine player (147).
