FRSC records 25 deaths in 71 auto mishaps in Abia

The Abia State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that 25 persons died while 326 others were injured in 71 auto accidents in the state since January.

Commander of the FRSC in Umuahia, Mr. Meshach Jatau made this known during the flag-off of the Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in the state.

Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on Tuesday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, flagged off the Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in the state.

He observed that over 90 percent of those crashes were a result of human elements and appealed to drivers to avoid those things that could cause road accidents.

Jatau said the event marked the climax in a series of sensitization exercises geared towards reminding motorists on the need to drive carefully and obey all traffic rules and regulations.

Abia Governor, Ikpeazu who was represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, commended FRSC for organizing the program, even though he expressed worry over the number of crashes on the roads.

“I wish to tell our drivers that there is nothing special about ‘Ember Month’, no demon associated with it. It is our action that is responsible for the accidents,’’

he said.

The governor used the opportunity to appeal to FRSC and other security agencies to help the state and the nation in minimizing the level of mortality on the roads.

Mr. Osadeba Osadebamwen, the FRSC Zonal Commander, Zone 9 Enugu, urged road users to always ensure that they have a stable state of mind while driving to avoid crashes.

“Road Safety is a State of the Mind, Road Traffic Crash is Absence of Mind, Stay Alert, Stay Alive,” Osadebamwen stated

He noted that absence of mind and due alertness, among others resulted in traffic crashes with attendant unpalatable consequences.

“There is nothing like an accident on the road. It is absent-mindedness that leads to a crash.

Don’t leave anything to chance. It depends on you to be saved on the road and for others to be saved too,’’ the zonal commander said.

Highlight of the exercise was free eye checks on drivers which is to ascertain the state of their vision.
