Guardiola Vows To Get Aguero Fit For World Cup, Targets EPL Points Record, Hails Wenger

By Johnny Edward:

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has promised that the club will support their Argentine striker Sergio Aguero in his bid to get fully fit to play at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Aguero began his rehabilitation on Wednesday in Barcelona after undergoing a meniscus surgery on his troubled knee a day earlier.

The 29-year-old is City’s top scorer this season with 30 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions and he is expected to be named in Argentina’s squad to face Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland in Group D at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

“It’s four or five weeks. We will try and get him (Aguero) ready for the World Cup. He’s in Barcelona now. The first part of his rehab is there,” Guardiola revealed during his pre-match conference on Friday ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with Swansea.

Guardiola also hopes his side can go on to set new records after clinching the title with five games left to play.

City are on course to break the Premier League’s points record for a season of 95 set by Chelsea in the 2004/2005 season. Guardiola’s side have 87 points from 33 matches and will reach 102 points if they win all their remaining five games.

“The moment when we were champions everyone was at home and we were not together. But over the nine months, every game we have won we have celebrated together. The feeling is…wow, a good feeling,” the former Barcelona manager said.

“In the past when I won the league early, the next few games were not good. But a good argument to keep going is the records. The important thing is to win the title but maybe the records can help us be focused against the teams fighting to avoid relegation.

“I didn’t come here to change English football. I am happy with the way we try and play and winning the titles. Thank you for your congratulations.

“If the people enjoy watching us – especially our fans and people who love football – that’s the best. I’m proud to be part of this organisation. A huge organisation. Being part of this family, it’s huge.

“(The PL) is so complicated to achieve it because the competition is so hard. The best way is to win against Swansea. That’s the best way to maintain the level.”

He also lauded Arsene Wenger for his achievements in football. The Frenchman announced in a statement on Friday that he will step down from his position at the end of the season ending his 22 year reign at the club.

“Arsene Wenger has all my respect. The Premier League is the Premier League now because of Arsene Wenger and what he has done, his vision and respect for football. I wish him all the best in the future.

“Of course it was a pleasure to compete against him.”

Guardiola also praised Andres Iniesta who according to reports in Spain will quit Barcelona at the end of the season.

“It was a joy for me to be Iniesta’s mate and his manager. You cannot understand his legacy at Barcelona and Spanish international football. A masterclass, top player. One of the players who understands the game so fully, it’s difficult to get better than him.”
