A female passenger in a commercial bus was shot during an attack on a bullion van by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers at Ubulu-Okiti, along with Benin-Asaba Road Delta State.
The victim whose identity has not to be ascertained was said to have been hit by a stray bullet from the robbers who stormed out from the bush on seeing the bullion van. Our correspondent learned that the attack happened on Tuesday.
The gunmen, numbering about 10, opened shot sporadically until the bullion van and the escort vehicles halted.
It was gathered that the hoodlums emptied the contents of the bullion van into their get-away vehicles before zooming off. However, the actual amount of money that was carted away could not be ascertained.
Sources said the robbery operation caused serious traffic on the ever-busy expressway, adding that motorists, passengers, and villagers close to the scene scampered for safety.
“It took a while for those who ran into the bush to come out even when the robbers were gone,”
one of the sources said.
Delta State acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the attack on the bullion van, but could not give further details. Edafe also said he was not aware of a female passenger was killed.
