° DPO, other officers injured

Gunmen have killed a Divisional Crime Officer, and a suspect in police custody, at Iganna Divisional Police Headquarters in Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oke-Ogun of Oyo state during an attack that lasted for some minutes on Tuesday.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the station and shot sporadically until they entered the facility. In the process, the volley of gunshots dispatched the DCO and the suspect to their early grave.

The Divisional Police Officer and a police Inspector on duty were also injured by the gunmen. They were said to have sustained lacerations from machete cuts and have been hospitalised.

It was gathered that the officers were attacked unprovoked by the assailants. But the policemen were said to have repelled the hoodlums from invading the divisional police headquarters at Iganna.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adebowale Williams, has paid an on-the-spot visit to the scene and has promised to make examples of the masterminds of the unfortunate incident that led to the loss of lives of the DCO and the male civilian with two others seriously injured on Tuesday.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that in compliance with the stop-and-search directives on unregistered motorcycles and overcrowded pillions to reduce the spate of robberies and abductions in the axis, operatives of the command attached to Iganna Divisional Police Headquarters, while on legitimate duties along Elejoka-Igangan Road, Iwajowa Local Government Area, were attacked by hoodlums who were clearly opposed not only to the directive but as well the relative tranquility in the axis.

Williams has, however, ordered full-scale investigations into the matter with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department leading the team.

He revealed that an arrest has been made in connection with the attack, though he did not give further details on the suspect that has been apprehended.
