Heart break for Tammy! VAR fails on Super Cup Night as Liverpool win shoot-out

Sadio Mane scored a brace in regulation time, Mohamed Salah converted Liverpool’s final penalty kick and in controversial circumstances, Eagles prospect Tammy Abraham saw his kick save by Liverpool’s goalkeeper Adrian to see the Reds crowned UEFA Super Cup winners on Wednesday.

Neither VAR nor Referee Stephanie Frappart spotted the Spaniard had left the goal line before the Chelsea number 9 kicked the ball.

It was a decisive moment, but Liverpool would once again claim the spoils in Europe, to cap their UEFA Champions League crown with another silverware.

Coming off a terrible weekend having lost 4-0 to Manchester United in the EPL season opener, Chelsea were clearly the underdogs.

For a moment it would have appeared so, but, the Blues quickly showed they were in Istanbul for business as Olivier Giroud struck before half-time (36′) to give Chelsea the lead.

It took just three minutes after the resumption for Liverpool to draw level, with substitute Roberto Firmino setting up Mane for his first of the night.

The sides battled hard but there was no more goals to come in regulation and so it dragged into extra-time.

This time it was Liverpool who drew first blood, with a perfect ball set up for Mane who fired home from just inside the box (95′) finding the top right corner.

Tammy Abraham came on as a second half substitute for Giroud; a fresh leg to unsettle the Liverpool defence and in extra-time he did just that.

The young forward forced Adrian off his line, committing the goalkeeper to make a failed attempt to save the ball, instead he bundled the Chelsea man over – Penalty.

Jorginho coolly converted the resultant kick (101′) and the sides were tied again. The game will be decided on penalties.

Kepa Arrizabalaga almost stopped two kicks, but he wasn’t going to be the hero of the day, that honor would go to Adrian.

The 32 year-old kept his calm to stop Abraham’s kick with the leg, and hand the Reds their first silverware of the season.
