Hector Bellerin reveals rehab anguish after fearing recovery setback

Hector Bellerin has revealed he feared an injury setback after a spasm in his leg caused the Arsenal star to wake up in pain, concerned that ‘something had happened’.

The Spaniard underwent surgery following a season-ending ACL injury against Chelsea in January.

Bellerín, In his spare time, completed a marketing diploma, set up a marketing agency with his housemate and invested in property. “I was taught that education is the most important thing,” he recalls. “You need a back-up plan.” It’s a philosophy that will stand him in good stead as he recovers from a knee injury that sees him sidelined for nine months.

Football is still Bellerín’s first love. If he loses a game, he can’t sleep. Yoga, meditation and a vegan diet are all coping mechanisms for the pressure, he said.

Bellerin described the pain he is enduring two months after his injury ‘The other day, I was sleeping without the cast. Sometimes when I sleep I just have to move my legs in a spasm. I woke up in the morning and had pain in the back of my knee. I went to rehab and told them but they said it’s normal.

Bellerin added: ‘I did a very tough rehab today. When I got home, I stood up from the sofa and couldn’t even walk because of the pain. I’m a bit scared now that something has happened.’

The 23-year-old missed Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Rennes on Thursday to qualify for the Europa League quarter-finals. But HECTOR BELLERIN is staying positive despite facing the prospect of not playing again until sometime next season.
