Historic Cup win for Okpotu, Orkuma in Tunisia

Second time was a charm for US Monastir as the clinched the Tunisian Cup following a 2-0 win over Esperance de Tunis, banishing the ghost of 2009 to clinch their first major silverware since 1923.

Ribat Team, Sunday, at the Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet defeated Esperance courtesy an Abdelkader Bedrane’s own goal and Yassine Amri’s 80th minute strike.

Monastir had Nigerian duo Anthony Okpotu and Moses Orkuma listed for the game and both got starters’ places in the encounter.

In 2009 Monastir lost 1-0 to CS Sfaxien in the final at Stade Olympique de Radès, but 11 years later the tables were turned and in the semi-finals, five days ago, Fahmi Ben Romdhane scored an extra-time winner to send Lassaad Chabbi’s side to the final.

Victory over the holders pitched Monastir against the most successful team in the competition.

The odds favored an Esperance win but Sunday’s upset became the second this millennium in the President’s Cup – since Espérance Sportive Zarzis’ 2-0 victory over EST in 2005.

Monastir Nigerian midfielder Orkuma described the triumph as “the sweetest victory”, in an interview with scorenigeria.

“For me, it is the sweetest victory because nobody believed a modest side like US Monastir will do it against the most successful team in Tunisia, Esperance.”

The Tunisian Cup is considered the second most important local title after the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
