I almost Committed Suicide! Ex Super Eagles Player recounts life shattering Experience in Belgium

Ex Super Eagles player, Godwin Okpara said he lost the better years of his youth in a French jail because of ignorance and having a bad partner at home.

Okpara opened old wounds on Brila FM’s morning Show “Ifeanyi Udeze’s Diary”, where he recounted his travails in Belgium and the now famous 10-year jail sentence he bagged for sexual abuse of minor and domestic violence.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Standard Liège midfielder said, he contemplated suicide at the time because of the depression.

‘I started thinking otherwise. Those who know me know I would never have done those things I was accused of.

‘It was so bad; I was in jail when I lost my 17-year-old son. He was taken from us by Cancer. Those were very difficult years,’ He said.

Okpara and his wife were handed lengthy jail terms; he got 10 and his missus 15, but the ex player insists he had a bad woman at home and that was his biggest undoing.

A tough tackling midfielder in his days, who kept an in-form Ronaldo de Lima in check, the man now in his mid 40s said he wasn’t as organized back home, so he was told.

‘I got 10 years and my woman 15. The court made it clear that I was facing those years due to my negligence back home. Not for any thing so egregious but because I didn’t reign it in back home.

‘It’s important to have a good wife at home. Very important,’ said Okpara.

The pair are still entangled in a nasty litigation over alimony, but the ex player claims they were never married, ‘not in a court or a church, we were never married.’
