Nigeria midfielder Mikel Agu says missing the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was a big blow for him, but he regretted his underwhelming performance in the qualifying game against Zambia.
The Vitoria de Guimaraes of Portugal midfielder was omitted from Super Eagles final 23 squads after fallen behind Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekharo Etebo, John Mikel Obi in the pecking order.
Agu told Super Eagles media team on Instagram live on Friday he was devastated after being left out of the squad, and blamed the omission on his underwhelming performance during the qualifying campaign.
“I felt more devastated with my performance against Zambia than being dropped from the world cup. People get messed up because they don’t understand the situation and about the journey. In life, before you do anything, it must be studied. You don’t just wake up one day, carry a car to drive, you have to be composed.” he said.
The former Porto star stressed further that despite missing the Mundial, he wasn’t short of offers from elite European teams.
“After the World cup, because I had a good season in Bursaspor, that was year Marseille came for me. I didn’t go to the world cup but I had close to fifteen offers as if I went to the world cup.” He concluded.
Mikel Agu has been superb for Vitoria de Guimaraes since joining them permanently from FC Porto last summer, he made his senior debut for Nigeria in a 3-0 friendly win over Togo on 1 June 2017.
He has made seven appearances for the Super Eagles and failed to register his name on the score sheet.
