Iceland star Gylfi Sigurdsson’s World Cup chances could be in doubt after Everton announced he will see a specialist on Monday over a knee injury he sustained against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Everton made the announcement on their official website on Monday.
Sigurdsson was in action for Everton who defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 in the Premier League.
Everton stated that the number of weeks Sigurdsson will be out will be known after his appointment with the specialist.
“Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist this evening to determine a timeframe for recovery from the knee injury he sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton at Goodison,” the club stated on their official website.
“It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive timeframe will be known.”
Sigurdsson is Iceland’s most important player and his absence would be a big blow for them at their debut FIFA World Cup in Russia where they are in Group D with Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia.
They will kick off their World Cup campaign against Argentina on June 16.
