The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offices Commission (ICPC) in Asaba, Delta State, said that some contractors were being prosecuted for either inflating contract sum or for abandoning projects after collecting money.

ICPC has vowed to bring to justice the contractors who abandoned their jobs and those who rushed to do shabby works to deceive the government and anti-graft agencies.
ICPC’s commissioner in charge of the Edo/Delta region, Mr. Yusuf Olatunji, who disclosed this, did not, however, put a figure to the number of contractors being prosecuted across the country. Olatunji spoke while fielding questions from newsmen on the sidelines of a stakeholder’s town hall meeting with the theme: ‘My Constituency, My Project’.

He said that ICPC recovered both money and equipment during the first phase of its Constituency Projects Tracking Group initiative carried out in 12 states after the launch of the initiative in 2019. Olatunji said the initiative popularly known as CPTG was done to ascertain if projects were executed satisfactorily, adding that it was a huge success in the communities polled during the first phase.

“I cannot tell you now, how much has been refunded by contractors because the refund is still going on, we are still collating the figures. However, some contractors who abandoned their sites have returned back to work as a result of our intervention. Also, we have seen an ambulance, tractors, generators and a whole lot of things being recovered. Some of the equipment like the tractors and some machines have been distributed back to the communities that were initially to benefit,”

Olatunji stated.

He stated that the commission was still in the process of compiling the list of abandoned projects in Delta which is among the states for the second phase of the CPTG initiative. Olatunji who said the town hall meeting was held simultaneously across all states of the federation, explained that the aim was to enlighten the public that projects are owned by the community and not the sponsors.

His words:

“We wish to state with emphasis that constituency and other projects are funded by the government with public money. This means that the projects are not gifts or donations to your community by political representatives. They belong to you as fruits of national resources and government responsibility to the people.”

In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Garba Abari, said that the agency was fully committed to the partnership with ICPC to ensure that citizens take ownership of projects sited in their communities.

Represented by the Delta State director of the agency, John Emah, Dr. Abari said the major concern of stakeholders in Nigeria after 20 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, was how to make the vehicle of development deliver the desired gains to the people, adding that this was the basis for the partnership between NOA and ICPC
