Omar Assar popularly known as the Pharoah of Lagos has been crowned African Cup Champion, after winning the 2019 ITTF African Cup on Monday.
It was a hard-fought 4-3 (10-12, 11-3, 11-6, 12-14, 11-3, 9-11, 11-3) victory over compatriot Ahmed Saleh who was making an appearance in the finals for the first time in nine years.
Saleh defeated Kherouf Sami of Algeria 4-2 (7-11, 6-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 2-11) in the semi-finals to set up all Egyptian final with Omar Asar , who got the better part of his arch-rival and defending champion Aruna Quadri 4-1 (11-6, 11-8, 3-11, 11-7, 11-3) in the semi-finals.
In the Women’s category, Egypt’s Dina Meshref makes it a hat-trick of African women’s singles titles after a dominant 4-0(11-9, 11-9, 11-1, 11-8) victory over compatriot, Helmy Yousra.
