Ladan Bosso Back with Flying Eagles but His Record Isn’t Palatable

Issa Ladan Bosso will return as Head Coach of Nigeria’s U20 National team for a second stint, 11 years after a World Cup campaign in Canada that ended quite disastrously.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced Bosso’s appointment on the weekend of September 25, but it has been greeted with mixed reactions and mostly viewed as an unpopular decision.

During the 2007 AFCON U20 Championship in Congo, the Flying Eagles scrapped and barely made it through the group stages.

They were underwhelming for the most part but reached the final where they eventually lost 1-0 to the hosts.

Two years prior, Nigeria won the African championship and reached the final of the FIFA U20 World Cup in the Netherlands, losing in an enthralling 2-1 final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

However, Bosso couldn’t replicate that feat neither, Nigeria suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Chile in the quarter-finals, after playing goalless in regular time.

Bosso has not held a national team position since and returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League where he has since worked with El Kanemi Warriors and FC Ifeanyi Ubah.

Most recently he was appointed the Manager of Gombe United before the league was suspended and eventually ended.

But, his first task now will be qualifying Nigeria for the African championship in Mauritania next year, through the sub regional qualifiers in Burkina Faso which is yet to get a kick off date.

Another immediate concern for the Coach will be scouting players, but the outbreak of COVID-19 and suspension of all contact sports in the Country will put a strain on Bosso’s back room.

Finding the best legs under this circumstances could prove slightly difficult and possible pile on the pressure on the Gaffer to succeed.
