Lagos takeover prosecution of 19-year-old ‘Yahoo boy’ who sets girlfriend ablaze

Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN has directed the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to take over the prosecution of a 19-year-old man, Orji Ifeanyichukwu Victor who was alleged to have set his 24-year-old girlfriend, Alabi Tolani Maria ablazed.

The Commissioner ordered the DPP to immediately take over the case file of the suspect from the police for diligent prosecution.
Mr. Onigbanjo disclosed this to journalists at a media parley held in his office on Tuesday.
Victor was arrested on Saturday by the operatives of the State Police Command from Iba police station for allegedly setting Mariam ablazed.
DSP Bala Elkana, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), disclosed this in a statement released to newsmen on Monday.

Elkana said the incident took place in Ojo, Lagos, where they both lived in Ifeanyichukwu’s N600,000 per annum apartment
The suspect who resides at G54 Army Post Service Housing Estate, Ojo, Lagos was arrested after setting his girlfriend ablazed on Saturday because he suspected that she has another lover
According to the statement, the suspect had confessed that he used petrol to set the victim ablaze. The victim died during treatment at Igando General Hospital in the early hours of yesterday.

While speaking with pressmen on the achievement so far recorded by the Ministry and different strategies being adopted to tackle issues of prison and court decongestion, abuse of human rights and others, Onigbanjo said nothing touched citizens more than their security and justice whenever they seek for it.
He said the current administration is no longer waiting for victims to report to authorities on issues bordering human rights abuse before taking action against violators.

“The Ministry recently intervened in respect of encroachment on land of an elderly couple at Ejigbo, whose video went viral on social media. The couple was invited to the office and police have been invited to investigate the alleged criminal activities of individuals named.
“As it concerns the administration of justice, in the last month, DPP received 212 duplicate files for legal advice and 164 have been issued and dispatched. The remaining 48 could not be treated because of a request for further investigation of the police.

“In the last two weeks, 49 plea bargain application has been treated. The introduction and utilization of the plea bargain have reduced  the time spent on criminal cases toward achieving prison and court decongestion, as well as saved, in no small measure, the amount of taxpayers money expended in the prosecution of matter in court “, he said.
