Makinwa backs Ajax to win UEFA Champions League

Former Super Eagles player and we international, Stephen  Ayodele Makinwa has tipped Ajax to win this year’s edition of the UEFA champions league after knocking out Juventus last night by a 3-1 aggregate score,  and a 2-1 win for them in Turin.

Ajax’s sensational Champions League run continued as teenage captain Matthijs de Ligt’s goal eliminated Juventus and secured their place in the semi-finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the tournament, headed the hosts in front from a first-half corner.

But Ajax battled level as Donny van de Beek controlled Hakim Ziyech’s shot and slotted past Wojciech Szczesny.

Ajax will face the winner of Manchester City and Tottenham’s quarter-final, which Spurs lead 1-0 before Wednesday’s second leg at Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to www.brila.net, Makinwa who played for Atalanta and Palermo and Lazio in the Italian serie A says Ajax’s hunger to win last night was greater than that of Juventus

” I think they can win the tournament at this point.”

“Barcelona is going to be a tough opponent for them and Barca can really be difficult on the night”.

Juventus had the hunger to win last night, but Ajax we’re on another level”.

Victory marks Ajax’s return to the last four of Europe’s premier competition for the first time since a team containing Daley Blind’s father Danny, Marc Overmars and Ronald de Boer were beaten in the 1997 semi-finals – by Juventus.
