But with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Raheem Sterling grabbed the all-important third goal to return City to winning ways andon the edge of the title.

Pep Guardiola’s side, 16 points ahead of second-placed United, now need three more points to finally secure this season’s league title.

City started the brightest and almost took the lead on three minutes but Leroy Sane’s shot crashed off the post.

They eventually broke the deadlock on 21 minutes as Jesus latched on to a long ball from Vincent Kompany before slotting past Hugo Lloris.

In the 24th minute City went 2-0 up as Gundogan converted from the penalty spot after Lloris fouled Sterling.

Sane almost scored City’s third goal on 29 minutes only to be denied by Davinson Sanchez who raced back to block the German’s effort.

With two minutes left in the first half, Spurs pulled a goal back through Eriksen who scored from close range off Harry Kane’s pass.

City had a big chance to restore their two-goal lead on 63 minutes after Gundogan found Jesus with a good pass but the Brazilian scuffed his shot from 12 yards.

On 71 minutes, Sterling had a chance to extend City’s lead after collecting the ball inside the box and rounded Lloris but Kevin Trippier blocked his effort.

A minute later Sterling made it 3-1 to City as he fired the ball into the roof of the net after Lloris had parried Jesus’s initial shot.

Spurs came out to try and get themselves back in the game but City held on to pick the three points.
