The Police alleged that the masquerade stabbed the man to death at Oke-Aro area of Akure on Monday.

Similarly, two brothers have been nabbed by police in Ogun State for allegedly hacking a motorcycle rider to death and snatching his motorcycle. Tobi Kodaolu, 20, and Kehinde Kodaolu,16, as well as their accomplice, Hammed Babalola, 18, were held over the killing and robbing one Oni Olajuwon of his Bajaj motorcycle on October 4, in Iyana Efon Village via Orile Ilugun in Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

Femi Makanjuola was accosted by the masquerade who demanded money from him and later killed him when he failed to oblige his demand.

It was gathered that the deceased recently secured a job with a cement manufacturing company and was preparing to resume work before he met his untimely death.

A source said: “The deceased was preparing to cook and had gone to a nearby shop to buy ingredients for the food he was preparing when he met his death.”

It was also alleged that there had been an alteration between the suspected killer and the deceased over some personal issues.

Parading the suspect at the state headquarters of the state command, the spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident. He said the chief priest of the masquerade crew has also been arrested.

Joseph added that investigation into the matter had commenced while the suspect was assisting the police with relevant information.

Joseph said: “All over the world, what we know about masquerade dance is to entertain the people. What happened in Akure was the contrary. Five young boys were on an outing with one of them acting as a masquerade and they got to where Femi Makanjuola was.

The masqueraders demanded money, which the deceased refused to give and this did not go down well with them.
“The argument led to the stabbing of the deceased after he had been thoroughly beaten by the masqueraders and his followers.

The investigation is ongoing towards apprehending other accomplices involved in the crime.”

However, the suspected masquerade, identified as Olu Olowokere, denied involvement in the killing of Makanjuola. He stated that the dastardly act was carried out by one of his followers after the traditional outing of the masquerade in the town.

Parading the Kodaolu brothers and their accomplice before newsmen at the Eleweran, Abeokuta police headquarters yesterday, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ilyasu, said that one Niniola Michael of Kila village, had reported at the Odeda Police Station that a lifeless body with several machetes cuts all over the body had been discovered at Iyana Efon village.

He added that the victim’s motorcycle with registration number Oyo GMO 513 UG was also snatched. Consequently, the DPO in charge of Odeda Division, CSP Baba Muhammed, was given a marching order to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

Iliyasu explained that through a forensic and technical based investigation, and synergy with Vigilance Service of Ogun State, the DPO and his men traced the snatched motorcycle to the suspects, who he added had been responsible for series of motorcycle snatching in Odeda and its environs.

“On interrogation, they all confessed to the crime. They admitted butchering the victim to death while trying to rob him of his motorcycle. As soon as we are through without investigation, the suspects would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.
