Meet Sydney Leroux – The six months’ pregnant footballer

The US footballer Sydney Leroux Dwyer who set the internet alight by sharing photos of herself resuming training for Orlando Pride.

While following some negative reactions, Leroux wrote that she does not put herself in any risky situations at training.

In response to a question about what she was cleared to do, she said “I just do non-contact stuff. Ball work. Getting touches in, I don’t put myself in situations where the ball can ricochet or I can get hit. No high intensity running and I listen to my OB [who knows more than people on Twitter telling me what I shouldn’t be doing with MY body].”

Sydney Rae Leroux Dwyer irrepressible urge to experiment, to defy, to take risks–is part of what made her special on the field.

Olympic gold medalist, Leroux, currently plays as a forward for Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). After representing Canada at various youth levels, she chose to play for the United States women’s national under-20 soccer team starting in 2008 and later began playing for the U.S. senior national team in 2012.

At 13, Leroux was depressed after her mom sent her to the US to play in front of American coaches. She became homesick, she missed her mom, She felt out of place on the field, she felt out of place off of it, she called her mom two to three times a day, crying, begging to go home. But she still had the field: “Soccer is what saved me,” she says.

In 2012, she set the record for most goals off the bench (12). Leroux has earned over 75 caps with the senior national team and was part of the Americans’ winning squads at the 2012 London Olympics and 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Leroux plays alongside Matildas stars Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond at the Pride — both who are currently in Australia to compete in the Cup of Nations.

The baby will be the second child for Leroux and her husband, Orlando City player Dom Dwyer, who have a son named Cassius.

Other athletes responded with photos of themselves practicing or competing while pregnant, including former pro golfer Paige Mackenzie who was training at 28weeks pregnant.
