5 Reasons to Wait for the iPhone SE 2 & 4 Reasons Not To

5 Reasons to Wait for the iPhone SE 2 & 4 Reasons Not To is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile.

Apple is reportedly working on a sequel to the popular 4-inch iPhone SE and today we want to walk you through some reasons why you should, and shouldn’t, wait for the rumored iPhone SE 2.

If you’re in the market for a new iPhone, but don’t want one with a huge display, you’ll want to take a long look at Apple’s 4-inch iPhone SE. The iPhone SE is still the best small screen iPhone available as we push in 2018.

The iPhone SE’s hardware is holding up and the device’s software continues to perform at a high level. The device’s also received 50+ new emoji characters thanks to iOS 11.1, Apple Pay Cash thanks to iOS 11.2, and Messages in iCloud thanks to Apple’s iOS 11.4 update.

The iPhone SE will also get Apple’s upcoming iOS 12 update, set for release this fall alongside new iPhone models including an iPhone X Plus.

The iPhone SE is worth considering in 2018, but you’ll also want to take note of the iPhone SE 2 rumors that’ve emerged.

iPhone SE 2 Rumors

The first iPhone SE 2 rumor from Focus Taiwan emerged in early August. The site claimed Apple supplier Wistron was preparing to expand its iPhone manufacturing in an effort to get a new iPhone SE model out in 2018.

A second iPhone SE 2 release date rumor from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News emerged in late November. According to the publication’s sources, Apple was planning to release a new iPhone SE in the first half of 2018 and it would be assembled by Wistron at its factory in Bengaluru, India.

Since then, we’ve seen several other iPhone SE 2 rumors emerge:

  • Taiwanese market research firm TrendForce backed up these claims with a report stating that Apple is indeed working on a new iPhone SE for the first half of the year.
  • Another rumor, from tekz24.com, claims the iPhone SE 2 design will borrow elements from the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X.
  • A more recent rumor, from the hit-or-miss Digitimes, suggests the same.
  • A sketchy rumor from Chinese news site QQ claimed Apple would launch the iPhone SE 2 at WWDC 2018 with a classic design and larger screen.
  • Taiwan’s Economic Daily News claims Apple won’t release any new iPhones in the first half of 2018.

French website Consomac recently discovered new filings in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) database. The filings reveal unreleased iPhones and there’s speculation they could be related to a new iPhone SE.

The same website discovered similar filings for a new iPad ahead of Apple’s March event in Chicago and the company went on to confirm an update to its 9.7-inch iPad.

UK retailer Mobile Fun’s also directed us to possible iPhone SE 2 renders from case maker Olixar.

The manufacturer believes Apple will include a notch on the iPhone SE 2’s design. Supporting images showcase a design with a notch cutout and slim bezels like the iPhone X.

Is this the iPhone SE 2 design?

Additional images from Olixar showcase the back of the supposed iPhone SE 2 which includes an improved design with a glass back like the iPhone X and iPhone 8.

The screen protector and gel case are both up for pre-order through MobileFun ahead of the rumored launch.

Unfortunately, a research note from well-respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo casts doubt on many of these iPhone SE 2 rumors

Kuo, who has accurately predicted many iPhone cycles in the past, claims Apple doesn’t have enough “development resources” to get a new iPhone SE out this year. And that puts those of you interested in buying a souped up version of the iPhone SE in a difficult position.

While some of you might want to hang around and wait for the rumored iPhone SE 2, others might not want to wait for a rumored phone, especially one that isn’t currently on Kuo’s 2018 roadmap.

Remember, there are several excellent iPhone SE 2 alternatives on the market right now. There are also some great deals on Apple’s current crop of iPhones.

If you’re currently on the fence, here are some reasons why you should soldier on and a few reasons why you might want to start looking elsewhere.
