N9.2 billion approved in 2019 budget for police can't fuel our vehicles for six months ----IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Muhammed Adamu has revealed that the N9.2 billion earmarked for the overhead cost of the Police in the 2019 Budget cannot fuel their vehicles for six months.

The IGP who was defending the 2020 budget, Thursday, said that a proposal of N63.9 billion was submitted by the police for a capital project in 2019, but on the envelope for the approval, it was slashed to N12.3 billion. Adamu said:

“In the case of heads cost appropriation, the total appropriation of N9,250,565,306, which is not even enough to fuel the fleet of operational vehicles at an average of minimal fuel consumption of 30 liters per day for more than six months, has not even been fully released.

“So far, N6.5 billion has been released, leaving a balance of N2.7 billion, which is yet to be released.”

Adamu lamented that despite the continuous increase in the security challenges in the country, it was amazing that the Police budget keeps on declining. He said:

“The primary function of the Nigeria Police as the lead agency in internal security matters is being challenged by inadequate funding.”

Adamu made a passionate appeal to the National Assembly to do something urgent about the plight of the police.
