New minimum wage: we will ground the nation from Thursday –NLC, TUC

Organised Labour in Nigeria has said it will commence nationwide warning strike over non-implementation of the new National Minimum Wage, effective from midnight of Wednesday.

General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson,  disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, yesterday.

Organised labour had accused the Federal Government of stalling negotiations by failing to arrive at a figure; as a new minimum wage for workers.

On September 12, labour issued the federal government a 14-day ultimatum where it insisted that the Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage should conclude its work within the stipulated time frame.

NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, had said the committee was not pleased with the comments allegedly made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.

Ngige had earlier told the committee to adjourn, indefinitely, to give room for further consultations with government on the new minimum wage.

The federal government assured organised labour that the tripartite committee on the National Minimum Wage would conclude its negotiation before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum.

Chairperson of the new minimum wage committee, Amal Pepple, gave assurances when she spoke to newsmen on the matter in Abuja, recently.

“We do not want a strike and I am sure even the federal government does not want a strike, and also Nigerians. So, we pray that everything will be resolved before then, so labour do not have to embark on any strike,” she said.

Ngige had said organised labour’s 14-day ultimatum was “a subtle blackmail” to stampede the tripartite committee on the new National Minimum Wage. He also said it was not true that the federal government is trying to stall negotiations.

Ozo-Eson said: “This is to inform you that organised labour shall commence nationwide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, effective from midnight of Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

“All industrial unions and all state councils are to commence mobilisation, immediately, for an effective strike, nationwide.”

On its part, the TUC insisted the organised labour would commence strike from the early hours of Thursday, following the federal government’s failure to honour its ultimatum on the new minimum wage.

A statement signed by TUC Secretary General, Musa-Lawal Ozigi,  in Abuja, said the decision to embark on strike was a sequel to the resolve of the Central Working Committee of the Congress on Monday.

Ozigi said following the mandate of the committee, TUC leadership would take all necessary action to effect the ultimatum on the new minimum wage in collaboration with other stakeholders.

“Strike is hereby, declared, to commence from the early hours of Thursday, September 27,” Ozigi reiterated.
