The leaderships of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) have agreed to work harmoniously with the police to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the forthcoming general election. Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, at Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) Event Centre, Ikeja, yesterday, NURTW state chairman, Tajudeen Agbede, and his RTEAN counterpart, who was represented by Ashade Ganiyu, assured the police boss that, being major stakeholders in the election, they would not have any reason to work against the peaceful conduct of the election.

Edgal told the transporters that the meeting was organised principally to solicit their cooperation towards ensuring the peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections, since they have, over the years, become critical stakeholders and partners in the conduct of elections in Nigeria. He noted that besides the numerical strength of the transporters, they also drive vehicles for the movement of essential and non-essential items, based on the memorandum of understanding they signed with the Indepedent National Electoral Commission.

Agbede warned the union’s members to shun thuggery and violence, threatening that the state council under his leadership would not hesitate to expel any member found indulging in criminal activities. He explained that the state the council has been enjoying peace in the last six years.

He said: “We have been having peace in the state since l became the state chairman and l will enjoin all our members to continue to maintain peace in their respective areas of jurisdiction. We will not tolerate any act that can tarnish our image and destroy the good work we have been trying to build.”
Agbede advised branch officers to always liaise with police formations in their areas of jurisdiction to maintain peace and order.

“I will implore all our branch officers to always get in touch with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and men of the State Security Services in their areas. You should always make sure you report any case of violence or disturbance to them. We want to support government to have violence-free elections,” he said.
