Okada riders kill 2 police officers , Injure others in Lagos

Commercial Motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders have killed two Policemen including a Superintendent of Police, and injured many others at the Ajao Estate area of Lagos.
The officers met their untimely death when they were on enforcement order against Okada riders plying restricted routes.
The Okada riders did not stop at killing the officers, they also attacked the police station in the area.

According to a senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not supposed to speak with the press, the policemen went to enforce the order on restriction when they met by stiff resistance as Okada riders went berserk, killed two officers, and injured others.

He said:

“Among the dead policemen was a Superintendent of Police (SP) while others were left with varying degrees of injuries”.

It was gathered that the operatives had embarked on an operation along Asa Afariogun Road in Ajao Estate when the tragedy occurred.

The Okada riders were said to have outnumbered the policemen, thus making it easier to first disarm the SP before using his service firearm to kill him.

A witness said that after shooting the SP, the riders stormed the police station where they allegedly opened fire which hit some policemen on duty.

Given the scale of violence, motorists and pedestrians, including shop owners were forced to scamper for safety.

As of press time, it was not clear about the number of casualties recorded, but a Police officer said that normalcy has returned to the area while investigation has commenced.
However, Okada riders have gone into hiding for fear of being arrested by the police over the death and injury inflicted on their colleagues.
