Police frustrates IPOB procession, arrests 51

Jewish adherents yesterday staged a peaceful protest in Umuahia the capital city of Abia State for the restoration of Biafra.


The police arrested 51 of the adherents of Judaism who took part in the protest.
The protesters comprising men, women and children were all dressed in Jewish attires and were chanting pro -Biafran songs while displaying placards bearing Jewish inscriptions as they moved round the streets of Umuahia.


Some of them were blowing trumpets while others called for the restoration of Biafra republic which they said was their dream country.
Military tank was sighted patrolling the streets of the capital city ,but there was no clash between the Army and the the protesters.


Members of the public, who appeared happy, were also seen waving at the protesters in apparent approval of their action.
However, the protest turned askew when the police intercepted the procession near the Event Center at Okpara Square.
Scores of the protesting Jewish worshipers were arrested by the police and bundled into their waiting van, even as they fired into the air and throwing tear gas to disperse the crowd.


There was pandemonium as Journalists covering the procession as well as members of the public who were affected by the tear gas and the chaotic situation scampered for safety.
A police spokesman in the state, Geoffrey Ogbonna , said 51 persons comprising 41 males and 10 females were arrested.


He said those arrested were found with Biafran and IPOB insignia, arguing that IPOB is an outlawed organisation.
Ogbonna said those arrested would face the music.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the arrest of Jewish worshipers who were doing peaceful rally and sensitization for Biafra referendum in Umuahia.


In a statement, comrade Emma Powerful, Media and Publicity secretary of IPOB said IPOB leadership would not fail to notify the Jewish Community all over the world, particularly Jewish worshipers in Israel and other parts of the world over the recent arrest of Jewish church members who were peacefully protesting for Biafra freedom.


“We are warning Abia state police commissioner to release those in his custody, 54 innocent citizens of Biafra who were doing peaceful evangelism in Umuahia for Biafra freedom. We blame Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and Abia police commissioner for the damage this action may cause in Abia state if they fail to release the innocent Jewish worshipers exercising their rights.


“IPOB is firmly rooted with peaceful way to restore Biafra and cannot change its resolve to become violent organization because of high handedness Nigeria Government and her security agencies especially police and army officers are using against IPOB members since freedom. state, Umuahia.inception of this peaceful means adopted by our supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“We are calling on the police and army officers to stop this humiliation and harassment forthwith on anybody identified with IPOB family worldwide or face the consequences of police
