Police kill 1, arrest 11 robbers, mob lynches 1 in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has shot dead a suspected armed robber and arrested eleven others during a raid on their hideout at the Oghor community in the UDU Local Government Area of the state. The police also arrested two suspected cultists who allegedly shot dead a rival at the Otu-Jeremi area of the LGA. Another robbery suspect was also lynched by a mob.

Delta State, acting Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright in a statement, noted that:” At the wee hours of yesterday, the police declared a manhunt for some suspects that have been terrorising the command and its environ, robbing, kidnapping and attacking police officers and carting away of their arms.

“Based on intelligence gathering, the commander, Eagle Net Special Squad, SP. Dimka Usman detailed a team led by DSP Inusa Danyaya and some civilian anti-cult unit, who stormed a notorious criminal hideout in Oghor community in Udu LGA, where some criminals have been terrorizing the state were hiding.

“On the arrival of the police patrol team and the civilian anti-cult unit, a gun battle ensued between the police and the hoodlums that led to the arrest of Henry Ogori, 25; Kennedy Akpotu,19; Promise Ophiomo, 24; Daniel Believe,19; Daniel Sele, 25; Paul Zion, 25; Igah Aminu, 27; Philip Choice, 26; Joshua Ogunamen, 21; Johnson Opiomo, 22 and Joshua God’swill, 24.

“One of the suspects, Igah Aminu, later died due to a gunshot injury. Exhibits recovered from the suspects included: two English-made Beretta pistols, three rounds of live 9mm caliber of ammunition, and six mobile phones. The suspects have confessed to the crime and effort is being intensified for the possible arrest of the fleeing suspects who escaped with bullet injuries.

“In another development, on the same day, at about 4:40 am, a distress call was received from the Station Officer, Ekakpmre, outpost, under Otu-Jeremi division, that members of a cult group, led by Oghenerona Young Goddy (aka king Jaja of Ekakpmre/Egbou Hurie communities Otu-Jeremi) went to the home of Ebeni Jelekun, 29 of Ekakpmre. He allegedly belonged to Aiye confraternity, shot him severally, and fled.

“The Divisional Police Officer, Otu-Jeremi, CSP Pius Eredei, led patrol teams to the scene, six expanded ‘AA’ cartridges were recovered. The victim was rushed to Otu-Jeremi General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body was deposited in the mortuary. The DPO intensified the effort to arrest the suspects, and as a result, two suspected cultists, Omoyevwe Emmanuel, 29, and Marcus Michael, 24 both of the Usienfurun community were arrested with charms. The investigation is still ongoing”.

Bright said a suspected armed robber was rescued from the hands of a mob who was attempting to lynch him.
According to him, there was a report by one of the indigenes of the Ovade community that along Oviade Road to Oghara, he was attacked by three armed men. But he was able to escape and raised the alarm. It was the alarm that attracted youths of the community who went after the gunmen and one of the suspects, Gabriel Igodo, 35 had already been beaten to stupor. The police rescued him and rushed him to the hospital where he later died. One short barrel gun with one live cartridge was recovered. The investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects”.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammed Ali, has urged members of the public to support the police by giving vital information to the police as he assured that with the support of Delta State indigenes, the state will witness peace.
