The Delta State Police Command has stepped up the manhunt for the criminals who murdered a prominent village head in Ogume community in the state, Chief Otuya Oweka.
The police confirmed at the weekend that Chief Oweka was murdered February 10, 2022, in his town during a fight between his community and another town over land.
There has been a lingering feud between the two communities over the ownership of a tract of land where hydrocarbon (gas) was discovered, for which compensation is normally paid to the host community.
The tragic fight, according to the police, was because of the huge amount of money always paid to host communities by oil companies that exploit oil and gas in the area.
It was alleged that Oweka was killed during a clash that broke out as a result of disagreements and violence that erupted over ownership of the land in contention.
A senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity, as he was not supposed to speak with the press, confirmed that the names of some of the perpetrators of the killing have been handed over to them. The officer said those who were named have fled the communities for fear of being arrested.
“We have stepped up a manhunt for them. We will arrest them and bring them to book. They have been killing and maiming people, but the murder of a village head like Oweka must be avenged. We are going to use all the resources available at our disposal to fish out the youths and their sponsors who perpetrated this dastardly act and bring them to justice. Even if some of them have fled the country, we shall use INTERPOL to bring them back to Nigeria.”
Since the police stepped up the manhunt for the killers of Oweka, there has been uneasy calm in the community, while an atmosphere of fear and suspicion has pervaded the area. Families are worried over the exodus of their young men and women who have left the communities for the fear of being arrested.
Delta State Police Publlic Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the police have swung into action and raised the tempo in their determination to nab the fleeing suspects.
