Polls : Tension in Delta community as police uncover bomb

There is palpable fear in Delta as the Police have uncovered plans by some hoodlums to bomb pooling booths in the state.

The police however , intercepted the vehicle conveying the explosives at the Ugheli – Patani road .

The police recovered 128 explosives and five pieces of electronic detonators which have been handed over to the Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD ) of the Police .

It was gathered that the Police Command Led by Commissioner of Police Adeyinka Edeleke, while on patrol Intercepted a White Hilux van without number plate and flaged it down with the intention to search the occupants ,but they took to their heels and ran into the bush .

It was gathered that when the vehicle was searched 128 Pieces of explosives and five pieces of electric detonators were found inside the back compartment of the van .

Acting Delta State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Chuks Orisewezie who confirmed the story said occupants of the Vehicle refused to stop when the police on stop and search stopped them and they were given a hot chase by the Police and they abandoned the vehicle and ran into the bush .

The PPRO said : “The van and the explosives are now in Delta State police Command Headquarters Asaba and have been handed over to the Explosives and Ordinance Department (EOD) of the State Police Command.

He said CP Adeleke has assuaged the fears of all Deltans, stating that there was no cause to be apprehensive as the police were on top of the situation .

He said :” on Thursday at about 1945hrs, the team while on stop and search duty along Ughelli –Patani road intercepted a white Toyota Hilux Van which refused to stop. The team gave the vehicle a hot chase, the two occupants abruptly stopped and escaped into a nearby bush. Upon thorough search of the vehicle, 128 pieces of 60mm.156 kg emulsion chemical substances and five pieces of electric detonators all concealed in several black bags were recovered. The Items which are suspected to be explosive components have been handed over to EOD which has since confirmed that the items were explosives .

He said the CP has admonished members of the public to be vigilant and security conscious and to promptly report any strange objects to the police or any security agency nearest to them. He further warned that anybody in any guise that has an intention to cause mayhem or disrupt the election by any means would be seriously dealt with.
